There are over 6,000 languages spoken in the world today. When you’re travelling, you are exposed to many different cultures and languages. Sometimes the expectation of the people in the country you’re visiting might be to know at least a little – ie: Spanish or French speaking countries. Other countries it might be highly regarded and appreciated just to attempt polite greetings, such as in Thai or Arabic.
So when you’re travelling try and learn a few polite words or phrases in the local language. You may be surprised on how well received it will be, and how good it will make you feel. The best way to learn is to listen and watch the interactions of locals, then follow suit.
You can also download an app, bookmark a language translation website, or grab a language pocket guide for travellers. You won’t be sorry if you’re caught somewhere and no one speaks English. You can get by with travel language guides to ask for directions, rent a room or order food.

From bumping noses and sticking out your tongue, to air kisses and handshakes, greetings in different cultures vary, and are customary no matter what you think might be weird, inappropriate or too intimate. As Canadians we tend to say THANK YOU a lot, and in some cultures it is not necessary. Often a nod and a smile is sufficient.
If / when you are visiting another country, or a group of people are visiting or have immigrated to your country, be knowledgeable of customary habits and greetings. This way you won’t be caught off guard and you can adapt accordingly.
