There is nothing worse than looking up at the flight info board in an airport after a couple hours on a flight and seeing the dreaded DELAYED sign. Fear not my friends, we have some great ideas that will take your mind off the inconvenience of flight delays and may even offer up a bit of fun!

Work Out
Often times your airport will offer a fitness center or activity room. If it does, you’ll be able to pay a small fee to use the facilities. If they don’t offer any fitness facilities, you can always do yoga, tai chi, or Pilates. Not only will this give you something to do but it will also help keep you from getting jetlag.

Explore The City
This isn’t always possible or realistic, but if you can pull it off, you can get a few hours of exploring a whole new city by hiring an Uber or taxi.  If you do consider this option, make sure you are able to leave the airport. Some countries have visa restrictions on travellers who are just stopping over. If you are able to leave the airport, ensure your luggage is stowed safely or with you at all times, and that you are back in time to clear security.

Play Board Games
Take a travel-sized board game with you on your carry on. Bingo, playing cards, backgammon, chess, checkers, and Yahtzee are some easy games to pack. This will keep the kids busy or you can invite a fellow passenger to play and get to know someone.

Take Advantage of Free Airport Activities
Believe it or not, some airports offer free activities to travelers at the airport. Many larger airports offer live music in airport bars and some even offer yoga classes. Head over to the information desk and ask about any activities the airport has to offer.

Go On A Scavenger Hunt
This will keep the kids entertained for a while and is even fun for adults traveling together. It doesn’t take too much effort to dream up a scavenger hunt that would send you on a fun adventure. You don’t even need to spend money. Scavenge for things you have to spot like a man wearing a red hat or a woman with a green suitcase.

Take Advantage of Kid-Friendly Airports
Chicago O’Hare International children’s aviation exhibit is complete with kid-size cargo planes, cockpits, luggage station, and Legos. San Francisco International Airport’s SFO Kids’ Spots include a weather-themed play area with structures that help kids get out the wiggles during waits, as well as interactive learning centers spotlighting local artists. Again, you will be able to ask someone at the information desk if there are kid friendly activities provided in the airport.

Set Up A Business Meeting
This is not always feasible, but if you travel often for business and you have clients, staff or vendors in the city you are delayed in you may be able to set up a last minute meeting at an airport restaurant, cafe or coffee shop.
