With the holiday season in the not too distant past, we now turn to leaning out that waist line and sticking to those resolutions. Wellness travel can give you the best of both worlds by offering a way to (as Hal and Joanne used to say) get fit and have fun!

Wellness travel is defined as travel associated with the pursuit of maintaining or enhancing one’s well-being. Think of it as a way to recharge the body and nourish the mind, by way of visiting destinations based on natural beauty (as opposed to tourist sites), restorative activities, and eating healthy food. With so much stress surrounding some vacations, wellness travel leaves you feeling relaxed when you come home and ideally transformed in some way regarding food, mindset or physical activity.

Activity examples:

  • Yoga
  • Chakra Healing
  • Tai Chi
  • Visualization
  • Massage
  • Meditation
  • Hiking
  • Kayaking
  • Zip-lining
  • Biking
  • Paddle board yoga
  • Horseback riding

Keep in mind this is not an inclusive list. There are many activity levels and options to wellness travel depending upon your age and interests. Your wellness vacation can be tailored to your preferences.

Food
Food and restorative nutrition plays a big part in wellness travel, and is, by all accounts incredibly delicious. Many of the packages offer healthier ways to not only feed you, but show you how food impacts your life and help you to maintain better diet choices well after your vacation.

Destinations
While there are no hard and fast destinations for wellness travel, they are often in hotter climates. Yoga on the beach (for example) is a common one, however, wellness travel can take you anywhere in the world. There are restorative spas in Iceland as well as Maui, Southeast Asia offers some amazing healthy food experiences, and India is a mecca for meditation retreats. Whatever the experience you desire there is a place that offers it.

Wellness travel is generally a 360 deal. By this I mean that when you book a wellness trip, quite often the flight will offer yoga or meditation and your accommodation is matched with the relaxation/restorative theme as well. In addition, within the travel industry there are traditional travel providers who offer wellness options including wellness cruises, wellness wedding packages, family packages and solo retreats.

Forget the Souvenirs
Ultimately wellness travel is about changing your lifestyle to seek out better food choices, pursue activities that keep you in the moment and retain experiences that aim to change your thoughts, feeling and emotions. Now that is a vacation!
